Freedom Surf School was founded by Billy Butler a surfer for over 30 years, past member of the National Irish Surfing Team and having travelled to such far off destinations as Indonesia, Australia, France and the Canary Islands Billy has never stopped chasing the waves. Billy’s past experience running a local surf school & surf club, keen interest in sport, pride in his local community & the environment has led to the creation of his own surf school Freedom Surf School & Adventure. 

Safety, customer service, qualified staff and the promotion of physical activity for life are core values of Freedom Surf School. Freedom provides organised outdoor activities that are both challenging and fun using the local outdoor environment. We endeavour to keep the free spirit of surfing and love of the Great Outdoors alive. 

Freedom has incorporated its love for the Irish language within its outdoor activities and has developed Freedom Scoil Surfála 'is Ionad Gníomhaíochta Teanga. By using sport and outdoor activities to promote and teach Irish, people are finding that the Irish language can be fun and easy to learn within this environment. There is a powerful link between doing and learning therefore by experiencing an exciting outdoor activity and learning a language has proven to be a very successful learning combination.

Freedom has also been involved in teaching kids with learning disabilities to surf. As part of the national Surf2heal organisation Freedom Surf School works with kids with autism teaching them to Surf. Part of Freedom’s ideal is to bring the sport of Surfing to everyone.

Freedom Surf School is all about making your experience unique, by providing personal attention, skills and knowledge to the teaching of surfing within a safe and fun environment.

Freedom Adventure Activities

Freedom Adventure is all about experiencing our amazing local environment through a number of activities such as, Land Yachting – Blokarting, Team Building, Coastal Adventures such as Nordic Walking, Environmental Hikes and Historical Walks. All our activities can  also be experienced through the Irish & French Language.

Freedom is located on the edge of Tramore's Nature Reserve  & Natural Adventure Park - Tramore Beach .

Pam Butler -Assistant Manager / Team Building Co-Ordinator

Originally from Canada, Pam has travelled extensively throughout Europe and Australia, A keen interest in physical activity, particularly swimming. She is former Assistant Manager of the T-Bay Surf Centre, Pam is currently studying Youth Counselling with the National Counselling Institute of Ireland, she adds a person centred approach to the activities provided.

Where it all began:                           

Pictured here is Billy at his parents  Beach Cottage,actually its the old out house section- transformed into a surf shed back in the 70’s where Billy started out surfing from. This is the  original surf shed used by some of Tramore’s local surf crew as their base ,The new Beach House  built at the same location, now offers modern facilities such as changing rooms,hot showers, lecture room and lunch area.s  this new Facility ”  will endavour to keep the free spirit of Adventure & Surfing alive.
